Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long will it take for me to upload a model file and have my building model ready for simulation and reporting?

Building upload times vary depending on complexity, typically this will take at least 15 minutes but complex buildings can take several hours. You will receive a notification when your building has been uploaded.

  • How do you calculate costs for retrofit?

Each retrofit option references an installation specific pricing method whose base costs are taken from reliable industry sources including BSRIA and SPONs.

  • Can you customize the AER reports?

Currently there are no customization options on the interface, however the AER can exported to .DOC which can be edited freely. Future releases of the interface will accommodate strategy customization.

  • Can I upload level 5 models?

No not through arbn consult - however we do have in house consultancy support so please contact us if you require help.

  • What if for whatever reason arbnco can not process the model?

We will only process the payment after our backend has finished processing the corresponding simulations without any errors.

  • What if I upload a model file and realised there were errors?

You can re-upload building model files free of charge during the 12 month period you have initially been charged for.

  • Why is the strategy for a D/E rating not showing on my AER?

Strategies are not guaranteed to find the aimed ratings since this depends heavily on the building's model. Also, strategies may find the same recommendations package and hence the redundancies are hidden for clearer read of the report.

  • How does arbn consult differ to any other recommendations report?

It differs because it provides costing for the fitting of retrofit measures. These costings are taken from BCIS, Spon's guide and data we’ve collated. The recommendation report doesn’t give you that cost range and can’t be used as a decision support tool in the same way that arbn consult can. It also quickly gives you an indication of whether improvement measures meet the MEES regulations requirement.

  • How is the payback rate determined and why is it used?

This the based on base bank lending rate.

  • Can the software be used in conjunction with an unlodged EPC model file?

Yes, it can. arbn consult estimates that there is considerable potential to add your own fees on top of arbn consult’s fees. There is no reason why when providing a detailed report to your client, you shouldn’t be able to at least double the fee that arbnco charges for analysing the EPC. That is one of arbnco’s main goals, to help assessors and property professionals find new ways to generate revenue and improve their existing client services.

  • Is there a time limit for working on a building file on the platform once it has been uploaded and paid for?

You have 12 months in which to run multiple simulations on the building file that you have uploaded to the platform.

  • I would be interested in using this, together with GDAR, for ESOS analysis, would it be suitable for this?

The platform does provide an indication of CO2 savings which can be achieved through retrofit works, therefore, arbn consult would anticipate the platform could be used in conjunction with ESOS.

  • Can the software work on EPCs that have not been carried out by the same person?

Yes, any user can upload model files from different assessors and different accreditation bodies.

  • Is it possible that no positive payback may be achieved? I had several EPCs where just by changing the lighting did not work.

It is of course possible but it is important to ensure that efficiencies and outputs for retrofit lighting and indeed efficiencies for other recommendations reflect real world efficiencies. When running an EPC with retrofit lighting, lamp efficacy and lighting output ration should reflect the values which would be reasonably achieved with a retrofit solution.

  • If I make a change to the model is there another upload fee?

Once a simulation has been paid for, unlimited additional simulations can be undertaken for 12 months.

  • Can you introduce measures that are not shown in the EPC recommendations?

The platform automatically considers recommendations that may not have been available to the NDEA when the EPC was first lodged. This may include options not available under the original version of iSBEM and options arbn consult’s collated data may determine could be adopted. The platform automatically rejects options which, despite attributing real world efficiencies, would not have meaningful impact on the EPC rating.
